brief thoughts on some terms.. 1.) Postconservative Evangelical Roger Olson (Baylor) uses this terminology (http://www.generousorthodoxy.net/thinktank/files/postconservative.pdf) to describe a group of thinkers who, "were especially attracted to the postmodern musings of postliberal thinkers such as Hans Frei, George Lindbeck and Stanley Hauerwas. They were also interested in dialogue with the writings of Lesslie Newbigin in theology and Alasdair MacIntyre in philosophy." He also notes that they are not postevangelical and continue to hold to many traditional evangelical doctrines. 2) Younger Evangelical Robert Webber (Northern Seminary) uses this term as the title of his book in 2002. "The younger evangelical is anyone, older or younger, who deals thoughtfully with the shift from twentieth- to twenty-first century culture. He or she is committed to construct a biblically rooted, historically informed, and culturally aware new evangelical witness in the twenty-first century." http://www.jordoncooper.com/postmodern/comparison.html for a chart from the book. 3) Postconservative This term is used by John Franke (Biblical Seminary) in his book The Character of Theology. Franke chooses the term as to show that conservative theology has not been the sole possession of evangelicals and to show parallels to the journey of postliberalism. 4) Postevangelical This term is used by UK pastor Dave Tomlinson in his book The postevangelical which is the way that I was introduced to the conversation. |
